Shopping in Egypt

Egypt is a wonderland of shopping opportunities. Of course, there are the famous bazaars such as the Khan el-Khalili, but then there are also thousands of unusual stores scattered about the country, and especially in Cairo, though some products are better purchased perhaps from the locale from which they are produced, such as alabaster in Luxor. However, Cairo provides a huge variety of everything from antiques to fine clothing and especially jewelry.

In some shops, you must haggle while in others the price will be set. Which type of store provides the best possible deals depends both on the shop itself and the haggling ability of the buyer an seller. Frequently though some of the best deals at the best consistent quality is found in stores with fixed prices. For example, one might haggle over a mother-of-pearl box in the Khan el-Khalili and wind up paying a fairly low price but for an inferior products, while in a fixed price shop, one might end up paying more, but for a far superior mother-of-pearl box.

The purpose for this section is to provide Tour Egypt readers with information both on how to shop in Egypt, as well as to enlighten them on how to tell what makes various products better or worse from the standpoint of quality. Of course, for those not traveling to Egypt, our Virtual Khan el-Khalili, Tour Egypt's online shop provides many quality products found in Egypt at reasonable prices.

Medical tourism

es

Although much attention has been given to the growing trend of uninsured Americans traveling to foreign countries, a McKinsey and Co. report from 2008 found that a plurality of an estimated 60,000 to 85,000 medical tourists were traveling to the United States for the purpose of receiving in-patient medical care;[66] the same McKinsey study estimated that 750,000 American medical tourists traveled from the United States to other countries in 2007 (up from 500,000 in 2006).[67] The availability of advanced medical technology and sophisticated training of physicians are cited as driving motivators for growth in foreigners traveling to the U.S. for medical care,[66] whereas the low costs for hospital stays and major/complex procedures at Western-accredited medical facilities abroad are cited as major motivators for American travelers.[67] Also, it has been noted that the decline in value of the U.S. dollar is offering additional incentive for foreign travel to the U.S., although, costs differences between the US and many locations in Asia far outweigh any currency fluctuations.

Several major medical centers and teaching hospitals offer international patient centers that cater to patients from foreign countries who seek medical treatment in the U.S.[68] Many of these organizations offer service coordinators to assist international patients with arrangements for medical care, accommodations, finances and transportation including air ambulance services.

It should be noted that many locations in the US that offer medical care comparable in price to foreign medical facilities are not Joint Commission Accredited.

Medical Tourism in Egypt

Egypt has been a tourist magnet for many years, owing to its monuments from ancient civilizations and its exotic aura. It is also one of the newer, emerging destinations in medical tourism. With high standards in cosmetic surgery, combined with low prices, Egypt has become a very affordable medical destination, and the ideal place to combine medical treatment with a cultural experience or a seaside vacation.

Egypt boasts a climate and natural environment considered to be quite therapeutic; from its dry, warm weather to mineral and sulfur rich springs and the healing black sands found at Safga. The country is also rich in its range of treatment resorts and spas on offer. Clinics, hospitals and staff offer world-class services which are on a par with those offered in the UK, Europe and North America. Many of the doctors receive their training and specialist credentials abroad.

A number of specialized tour operators offer medical tourism packages that include a choice of doctors and hospitals, consultation, treatment, recovery plan and tours. Personal helpers for those needing assistance can be also arranged and you’ll find that there are few, if any, language barriers, as tour and medical personnel speak English. In addition to essential medical procedures, many who visit Egypt take advantage of the excellent services in cosmetic treatments and dental work.

Egypt and the global financial crisis

Egypt and the global financial crisis

and the global financial crisisen

The origins of the global financial crisis could be traced back to August 2007, when people with mortgage debts, in the US, could not make their payments. Consequently, banks faulted on their payments to investment institutions, to which those debts were sold.

Major US banks such as Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch and insurance companies such as The American Insurance Group have suffered.

With the teeth of the global financial squeeze sinking deep, Egypt had to adopt urgent measures to head off the crisis. President Hosni Mubarak held a number of meetings at which he discussed the measures to be adopted and the effects on Egypt's financial sector to be expected.

On their part, cabinet officials said that Egypt's banking system is capable of absorbing the crisis. The only sector likely to be affected, however, is the stock exchange.

Egyptian banks are no longer burdened with bad debts. The debt problem has been solved over the past 4 years. 50 per cent of those debts were repaid. The remainder is rescheduled.

Moreover, mortgage lending accounts for no more than 3 per cent of the credit lines offered by Egyptian banks.
